His Command Is That You Walk In Love

2 John 1-6 KJV,

1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
Let us get an understanding of this Text
“The elder,” I feel is John himself. He is referring to his status or position in the church and also referring to his own age. John was one whose maturity and wisdom had made him worthy of trust.

The name “elect” was used in the first century church in the same way we use “born again Christian” or saint of God—to identify individuals as born again believers who had been filled with the Holy Ghost and had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The term does affirm that these have been chosen by the Lord Himself, called out of darkness into this marvelous light of truth to follow the teachings of Christ Jesus, while at the same time leading others to Him.

It is so true that we do want Him as our God. So therefore it is okay to say, “I have accepted Christ,” as long as we realize Christ has to accept us first. It was the call of Christ that came to us and even got us to start searching for Him.

John said he rejoiced to find the children of God still walking in Truth.
In this setting of scripture, “truth” is linked to the reality of living for God. A person who walks “in the truth” lives in harmony with spiritual and moral reality, and our lives reveal the likeness of Christ Jesus. For you and I to walk “in the truth,” we must love everyone as Christ loved us. We are to live godly and Christ like before the whole world. Our holiness will not just be on the outside but it will be show forth from our life and thru our daily living.

John emphasized a particular reality all Christians are to experience.
“His command is that you walk in love” 2 John 2:5–6. As saints of God, true Christians, we show our obedience to Jesus and our harmony with Him, by loving all the other saints of God.

John emphasized this was not a new message by any means. He did say the command wasn’t new. That the elect lady (church) and her family (saints) had this message from the beginning, 2 John 2:1 & 6.
John was not apologizing for writing this truth again. He is simply saying, love is so important, we must be reminded of it all the time. John wrote that love is a commandment. Saints of God let us all learn to walk in love.
